WORLD HINDI SECRETARIAT: The development of Hindi language
online
Familiarizing Mauritians with the use of tools and software available online for
the development and promotion of the Hindi language. It is the target set by
three experts in the Great Peninsula who, for five days, conducted a workshop at
Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre in Bell-Village. An initiative to be credited to the
World Hindi Secretariat, which is increasing its activities since the
appointment of Poonam Juneja as secretary-general and that of his deputy,
Gangadharsing Sooklall.
This workshop was attended by three experts in IT, including Purnima Varman,
Lalit Kumar and Balendu Sharma Dadhich. The first appointed is a career journalist who
has won several prestigious awards including the Pravasi Media Samman Award by
the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the Jayjaywantee Samman Hindi Gaurar
Samman and Moturi Satyanarayan Puraskaar. She regularly collaborates with
newspapers of general circulation which are the Amrit Prabhat, the Jansatta, the
Rajasthan Patrika et Monarama.
Balendu
Sharma Dadhich also has an impressive track record. He received the Delhi
Government Knowledge Technology Award for his contribution in the social field
from from the Indian government. He is also the editor of the portal
prabhasakshi.com and has greatly contributed in creating a logistics to promote
Hindi language through the system Madhyam. Balendu Dadhich stated to have
implemented the Unicode standard (the standard computer designed to allow the
coding of written text, Ed) for the characters in the Hindi language, which was
integrated into the Microsoft network for learning, word processing and mail
exchanges in this language. He was delighted to share his knowledge of computer
technology to Mauritians: "The computer has now become a very important tool for
blogs, magazines and newspapers online." According to him, the purpose of this
workshop is to motivate Mauritians to learn Hindi using the facilities available
on the net.
Lalit Kumar for his part, has worked in the UN on several projects as a computer
specialist. He resigned from the UN in 2006, after obtaining a scholarship from
the Scottish Government. Lalit Kumar has obtained an MSc with distinction from
Heriot-Watt University. He has a passion for literature in Hindi, web
application development and web development community. Our distinguished visitor
is also the founder of the online journal Kavita Kosh, which is visited by
approximately 150,000 users monthly.
Poonam Juneja expressed her satisfaction with the interest shown by participants
to the use of software in teaching and promoting the Hindi language.
